STORM MAY DROP ‘BOMB’ ON REGION

- Rich Schapiro

TROPICAL storm Philippe is packing drenching rains and howling winds and is forecast to sweep through the region Sunday into Monday. A flash-flood watch is in effect Sunday night for the New York City area, including southern Connecticut and northeast New Jersey. At least 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected, with isolated areas seeing the potential for 5 inches or more, according to the National Weather Service. The system could undergo a process called “bombogenesis,” in which a rapid deepening of pressures leads to a swift increase in wind speeds near the center of the storm, the National Weather Service said. Winds are forecast to gust to 55 mph before the system moves away early Monday.
