Commish: I’ll deal with Wahoo soon

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said there is “no place in our sport” for racist behavior that was exhibited by the Astros’ Yuli Gurriel on Friday night.

So why hasn’t the commissioner done anything about the Indians’ mascot, Chief Wahoo?

“It’s an issue I intend to deal with in the offseason,” Manfred said during a press conference on Saturday.

Manfred dodged the issue just minutes after he gave Gurriel a slap on the wrist for making a racist gesture — slanting his eyes backward — toward Yu Darvish after hitting a home run against the Dodgers pitcher.

Manfred suspended Gurriel for five games to start the 2018 season, but is allowing him to continue to play in the World Series.

The Indians have said in the past they are trying to phase out Chief Wahoo — a disparaging caricature of a Native American — but continue to prominently feature him on their uniform.

If Gurriel’s suspension is any indication, Manfred may be more talk than action. — Healy
