Special Jackie hat sells for nearly 600G

-

A specially padded baseball cap that Jackie Robinson wore for protection against beanballs has sold for $590,994 at auction.

The blue Brooklyn Dodgers hat sold Saturday after a monthlong online auction through the sports auctioneers Lelands.

Lelands says Robinson wore the hat when he broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947.

Robinson endured constant racist taunts during that rookie year, and pitchers frequently threw at his head.

The padded cap came with a letter from Robinson’s widow, Rachel, describing the three protective plates sewn inside the lining.

The 95-year-old Rachel Robinson was in Los Angeles on Tuesday to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Game 1 of the World Series between the Dodgers and the Houston Astros.

Batting helmets didn’t become mandatory in the Major Leagues until 1956.

TOSSED FOR URINATING

A goalkeeper was sent off for urinating during an English football match.

Salford keeper Max Crocombe apologized after he was issued a red card for relieving himself at the home of Bradford Park Avenue in the National League North, the sixth tier of English football.

“I’d like to sincerely apologise for the incident today. I was in a very uncomfortable position and made an error in judgement which spoiled a great win,” Crocombe wrote on Twitter. “My intention was never to offend anyone and I’d like to apologise to both clubs and both sets of supporters and it won’t happen again.”

Bradford Park Avenue confirmed a supporter reported Crocombe, a 24-year-old New Zealander, to police.

l Anthony Martial came off the bench to score the only goal of the game as Manchester United beat Tottenham 1-0 at Old Trafford, preventing third-placed Spurs from claiming what would have been a valiant point in the absence of leading scorer Harry Kane.

Having suffered its first league defeat of the season last weekend at Huddersfield, United remained five points behind Manchester City, which showed no sign of slowing down as it stayed unbeaten at the expense of West Bromwich Albion 3-2.

Arsenal and Chelsea won to move within a point of Tottenham, while Liverpool was three points further back after it brought Huddersfield back to reality at Anfield.
