Remembering The Pile’s victims

-

Staten Island: I am again heartbroken (“Queens firefighter Robert Tilearcio — who fought for Zadroga Act — dies at 58 of 9/11-linked tumor,” Oct. 26). I didn’t know the man but as this tragedy continues I, and many others, feel for these people and their families. I would like to ask the Daily News to also please tell us when the volunteer construction workers pass away to more fully understand the scope of the aftermath.

Please ask the carpenters, ironworkers, steamfitters , electricians and all other trade unions in our city to please let us know of our brothers’ and sisters’ demise as they occur.

So many don’t realize how many trade unionists simply walked off their jobs and went, hardhats, boots and gloves in hand, just to help. And stayed! And went back, again and again.

Please make sure the world doesn’t forget my brothers and sisters too! Thomas McGuire

The meaning of the knee

Marietta, Pa.: It is easy for people to say that during the national anthem, “Protesting is disrespectful.” And in truth if you never saw a game or anything, it is probably true, and depending on the level of protest it might be illegal. So that word, “protest,” is called spin. If you say, “kneeling is disrespectful,” it is necessary for the opposition to argue some thought police argument to say this is truth. They are just kneeling, not screaming for justice over the anthem. But another sentence is even closer, because some people seem to feel that the word kneeling is akin to submission. Let us spread the truth. They are genuflecting. Genuflecting — “lower one’s body briefly by bending one knee to the ground, typically in worship or as a sign of respect.” Then we would be at the truth, and only one person would be able to continue arguing that genuflecting is disrespectful; that, of course, is our emperor without clothes. Voicing bigotry

Manchester, N.J.: I’ve read a few of Voicer John Scott’s letters, and I’ve always felt that he was simply another lowlife. But his Oct. 25 letter, ignoring visual evidence of John Kelly’s outright lie (not a misstatement, a lie), about Rep. Frederica Wilson’s speech at an FBI presentation, and referring to her as “Huggy Bear,” which I suppose is a reference to a black character in the old “Starsky & Hutch” TV series, clearly portrays him as a bigot and a clown. I’m pretty sure, if one would review film from the Friday night march in Charlottesville, one would find Scott and his tiki torch.

GOP blockers

San Francisco: To Voicer Arlene Jurewicz: Please get a clue. The record will show that, after Sandy Hook, it was not Obama and the Dems who blocked any sensible gun control legislation but, in fact, was definitely the Republicans who did. The answer is: An apple is always an apple. Jimmy Layton

Racial ID

Holliswood: Strange. When the Daily News reports a hate crime where the victim is black and the perpetrator white, your headlines scream “White on black hate crime.” But when a hate crime involves a white victim and a black perpetrator, The News doesn’t even mention the race of the assailant (“Hate fiend hurls liquid in gal’s face,” Oct. 26). Can you guys and gals write an editorial explaining why that is?

Scofflaw justice

Bellerose: The News should really investigate why the courts allow nonpaying tenants to stay in apartments for like six months after their leases expire. Upstate, you could not live rent-free for more than a month; you would be out in the street quickly. This just makes us Queens landlords take these apartments off the market and never rent again. Our tenants brought in a pit bull, guests that never leave, flooded our downstairs and make noise all night long while living rent-free. Now they will expect heat and hot water and where is the money coming from for utilities?

Slime out of the cracks

Yonkers: What in the world is going on here? What the heck is happening? It seems to have started with Bill Cosby. Now they’re coming out of the woodwork. Harvey Weinstein, Bill O’Reilly, James Toback and now Mark Halperin from NBC. Sexual harassment gone amok. I am waiting to see who’s next to come out as a sex predator. Why do women have to put up with these big-ego, selfish men in charge of these big companies? Women have to start taking the initiative when these things first occur so that other women don’t become victims, too. Francisco Matos

Bum Presidents

Hackensack, N.J.: Voicer Emily Wallace’s letter concerning President George H.W. Bush’s “groping” might as well have been written by Donald Trump. It is filled with inaccuracies. The former President has admitted to his behavior. His aide’s statement reads that “on occasion, he has patted women’s rears in what he intended to be a good-natured manner.” Then he tells an off-color, sexist joke. Hey! You don’t do that! As for the relevancy of sexual assault applying to former Presidents, are you saying Presidents get a free pass? Will Trump’s grabbing of women’s privates become an innocent act once he leaves office? It’s hard to believe this letter was written by anyone, much less a woman. Oh, wait. Trump supporter?

Runaway Cowboy

Richmond, Va.: Re: “Ezekiel Elliott to play Sunday, judge rejects expedited hearing” (Oct. 23). I just don’t understand why these folks are pushing this situation with Elliott when he wasn’t found guilty of any wrongdoing nor was he convicted. So what in the hell are they talking about violating some damn misconduct? They are fishing for something in the wrong river. Leave him alone and let those guys play ball. Bernice Cox

Crazy talk

Deer Park, L.I.: Voicer Paul Pepe thinks that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un should have nukes. That’s like giving Yosemite Sam the bomb. Both are high-strung.

Larry Nekola

God’s weather

Cross River, N.Y.: To Voicer James Pettus: Yes, it is possible God (He or She) is angry that Donald Trump is President and is creating these storms back to back. It is also possible the sun will come up tomorrow because God (He or She) is happy Hillary Clinton lost the election.

Scamming the country

Elmwood Park, N.J.: When will people finally realize what Hillary is all about? She is and always has been no good, she and her husband lining their pockets for years, robbing the American people blind. As far as being secretary of state, unqualified, only given position because of a favor from Obama. Please just go away and stop your whining.

Vegas questions

Walden, N.Y.: Fifty-eight innocent lives were taken, nearly 500 PETER MORGAN/REUTERS people hurt, and this tragedy still remains a mystery! I find it so hard to believe there aren’t any answers to why this happened. Why don’t they talk about the second window in the room that also was broken? Why don’t they show us any footage of this evil man carrying up to his room all the guns and ammunition? Where are the other people on the same floor as him? Where are his former co-workers and neighbors? Why just now (after a month) do we hear a hard drive was missing from his computer? Why is it that all the media talk about is gun control, and never questions this tragedy? It’s been swept under the rug. Again, I’m asking why, and sadly I feel someone has answers, but doesn’t want us to know. Gail P. Murray

Election horrors

Floral Park, L.I.: If your children are afraid of scary clowns, it’s not Halloween they need to worry about, it’s Election Day that is really scary. The voters of New York City are on the verge of reelecting the biggest scariest clown of all — Bill de Blasio. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Defining Donald

Brooklyn: Donald Trump says he was a “nice student.” “Nice” comes from the Latin “nescius”: “ignorant”(not + knowing), and was used in Middle English to signify “foolish” or “stupid” (Merriam-Webster).
