Terrorist cabbie drove us home – yeshiva students

- BYREUVEN BLAU

TWO UNWITTING yeshiva students recalled a nervous ride from Newark Airport — with a future terrorist behind the wheel.

Sayfullo Saipov, 29, was driving for Lyft when he scooped up Eli Grynhaus and d his older brother r Avrumi on Oct. t 19. The brothers had just arrived from a vacation in n Miami Beach, h, looking for a ride to their home in Lakewood, N.J.

The men, who o kept their receipt (inset), never talked religion or r politics during the e $71 fare. But Eli i Grynhaus said he felt a little uneasy when Saipov got lost during the trip that lasted more than an hour, from 5:45 p.m. to 7:03 p.m. “When we got to Lakewood, he took us down a back street,” Grynhaus said. “I asked him why he was going down there. I was starting to get nervous. It was a bad area. He said he made a mistake.”

Making small talk, Saipov told the teen students he once lived in Tampa. The driver also talked about how he alternated between driving for Uber and for Lyft, depending on the better fares.

The ride was largely uneventful, but set off alarms after Saipov used a rented flatbed truck to mow down bicyclists and pedest trians on a bike path in lower Manhattan on Tuesday, killing eight people.

“I freaked out,” G Grynhaus said Wednesday. “I was actually in a Lyft w with this guy? The fa fact that he killed e eight people yesterd day is just a frightenin ing thought.”

A Lyft spokesman acknowledged Saipov drove for the company. “Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic act,” the spokesman said. “We are in contact with and are assisting law enforcement.”

Saipov, who was slapped with terror charges Wednesday, didn’t get a tip. And Grynhaus didn’t rate the driver on the app.

“I didn’t get the warmest feel from him,” he said. “I could see there was hate.”
