Guilty in slay of gal pal, but not her babies
A DERANGED stabber on trial for killing his girlfriend and two of her children has been convicted of her murder — but not of her kids’ killing.
After four days of deliberation, a Staten Island jury Wednesday delivered a split verdict against Michael Sykes, 26, convicting him of the murder of 26-year-old Rebecca Cutler inside the Ramada Inn on North Gannon Ave. in Willowbrook on Feb. 10, 2016.
The jury was hung on whether he killed their 4-month-old Maliyah, and her half-sibling, Ziana, 1.
Sykes took the stand, saying he froze in shock as Cutler stabbed the two kids. He told the jury he killed Cutler after she turned the knife on her daughter, Miracle, then 2, who survived.
Prosecutors will seek a new trial for the children’s murders, said a spokesman for District Attorney Michael McMahon.
“Michael Sykes is now a convicted murderer and he will receive a life sentence in prison for the tragic death of Rebecca Cutler,” McMahon said Wednesday. “We will prepare to vigorously seek to ensure that justice is also served on behalf of her children.”
