UNITED AGAINST TERROR

NEW YORKERS HONOR VICTIMS AT SCENE OF SLAUGHTER

- BY DALE W. EISINGER and JAMES FANELLI

HUNDREDS OF mourners holding candles gathered Thursday night to hold a vigil for the victims of the terror attack in lower Manhattan and to march solemnly along the path where eight people were killed and 13 injured.

“It’s hard to believe that an area that 8 million people use a year in such a peaceful and happy manner has turned into a pathway of death and destruction,” state Sen. Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan) said. “We’re not going to let the darkness of terror prevail.”

The vigil was held two days after Sayfullo Saipov drove a truck down a bike path along the Hudson River for 14 blocks, plowing through cyclists. Six of the victims who were killed were tourists visiting New York City. One of the dead, Nicholas Cleves, 23, lived in Manhattan. Another, Darren Drake, 32, was from New Milford, N.J.

Anne Marie Martin, an interior designer and a 10-year resident of the West Village, held a lighted white candle and walked alone during the vigil. She said she comes to the river and uses the path most days.

“It’s a beautiful area and it’s very sad that happened,” she said. “I think we need to remember and honor the people who make New York special, both from far away and my neighbors.”
