More barriers for greenway

THE FIRST of nearly 60 cement barricades went up Thursday in vulnerable Manhattan intersections to discourage vehicle attacks like the one that killed eight people along the West St. bike path.

At 31 places where cars are allowed to cross the bike path, Jersey barriers will be installed to stop vehicles from turning onto the path, said Mayor de Blasio’s spokesman Ben Sarle.

At another 26 pedestrian-only crossings, cement cubes will be put up to keep cars out.

Earlier Thursday, City Council members and safety advocates pushed for bollards to block would-be attackers from driving into crowds at locations citywide that draw hordes of pedestrians.

Biker Mike Kurtis, who rides daily along the Hudson River Greenway, said the new barriers are “crude” but now necessary.

“If I’m afraid of anything, it’s a collision with joggers or other cyclists,” Kurtis said of his pre-Tuesday fears. “Now it’s a different story.”
