Fossil fuels will stop sex crime: Perry

- Denis Slattery

ENERGY SECRETARY Rick Perry says fossil fuels can prevent sexual assault.

The former Texas governor was addressing the future of the energy sector on Thursday during a policy discussion run by Axios and NBC when he claimed that expanding fossil fuel exports would play a “positive role.”

He said they could help bring electricity to remote African villages, which would have other b benefits.

“But also fr from the s standpoint of s sexual assault,” Perry (photo) s said. “When the lights are on, w when you have light that shines, th the righteousness, if you will on th those types of acts.

“So from the standpoint of h how you really affect people’s li lives, fossil fuels is going to play a r role in that,” he added.

After the comments, critics c called for Perry to step down.

“It was already clear that Rick P Perry is unfit to lead the Departm ment of Energy, but to suggest th that fossil fuel development will d decrease sexual assault is not only b blatantly untrue, it is an inexcusa able attempt to minimize a serio ous and pervasive issue,” said Sie erra Club Executive Director M Michael Brune.
