Juror unrest in slay-by-cop trial
DELIBERATIONS IN THE murder trial of a cop charged in a road-rage killing got off to a rocky start Thursday, as aBrooklyn jury tried to boot a member of the panel.
An hour into deliberations, the jury in the case of Wayne Issacs told a judge that one juror refused to participate in the discussions over whether Issacs was justified in gunning down Delrawn Small.
“Please excuse juror number (redacted), he or she is not participating in deliberations,” the panel wrote to Justice Alexander Jeong, asking him to replace the uncooperative juror with an alternate.
The juror in question was allowed to express his or her concerns with the judge and the attorneys in a private room. Afterward, the judge admonished the panel to not treat each other like “robots.”
“There’s 12 of you with 12 various personalities. There’s no set way to participate in deliberations . . . I expect all of you to fully cooperate,” the judge said.
The jury of five men and seven women went on to listen to readbacks from the medical examiner’s office and to watch all of the video surveillance. They will continue deliberations Friday. Isaccs, 38, faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted of murder and up to 25 years if convicted of manslaughter.
