Lonely, lonely Bill

-

In the last debate before his likely reelection, Mayor de Blasio was asked if he would reverse his opposition to tolling the East River bridges to curb choking congestion and fund the suffering subways. He said no. This is cheap populism masquerading as true progressivism, and it’s not selling.

The best way to tackle traffic and pollution — and provide a reliable funding stream for public transit — is to put a price on currently untolled bridges, and lower the price of travel over crossings that now cost more.

It is fair, because car owners earn more than those who rely on buses and subways. Which is exactly why Hizzoner is increasingly the odd man out as just about every left-leaning city official says yes.

Such as: the eight progressive councilmen who want to be the next speaker, Robert Cornegy, Corey Johnson, Mark Levine, Donovan Richards, Ydanis Rodriguez, Ritchie Torres, Jimmy Van Bramer and Jumaane Williams.

And: the liberal men de Blasio stood with Monday at a subway station pushing for more transit money, Assemblymen Felix Ortiz and Bobby Carroll and Working Families Party leader Bill Lipton. And: the mayor’s four appointees to the MTA. Mayor de Blasio, get on the train.
