The Mexican drug kingpin and escape expert is hearing things, depressed, repeats himself and forgets what he’s talking about, according to a new defense filing.

Joaquin (El Chapo) Guzman’s lawyer, A. Eduardo Balarezo, is asking for a court order to get a neuropsychologist to thoroughly evaluate his 60-year-old client. Since Guzman’s January extradition from Mexico to a solitary cell in a lower Manhattan lockup, his attorneys have complained about jail conditions. Now, they say his mental state is slipping.
