You wouldn’t think “let’s bring more guns into churches” would be a rational response to a ghastly shooting in a church, but America is not a rational nation when it comes to guns. There are people actually arguing that Americans who have the training and expertise to merit a concealed-carry permit should — indeed, must — bring their weapons into places of worship so that they can stop the next mass shooter.
Let us leave aside the infinitesimally small risk of being killed in a church shooting — or, for most Americans, of being killed violently at all. Let us, for the sake of argument, grant that churches are the new target, and that any society that does not immediately implement defensive measures against even the tiniest chance of a mass shooter in a place of worship is an uncaring, unfeeling society.
