Oilers sink Isles in OT; Devils fall to Blues

-

Connor McDavid scored 38 seconds into overtime to lead the Edmonton Oilers over the host Islanders 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Leon Draisaitl also scored for Edmonton, which has won two of three to improve to 5-8-1. Cam Talbot made 36 saves.

Thomas Greiss made 23 saves, and the Islanders got their goal from former Oiler Jordan Eberle. The Islanders have lost two of three and fell to 8-5-2.

“I knew it was going to be a tough game,” Isles coach Doug Weight said. “They played one of their better games. We did as well.”

McDavid finished a flashy 2-on-1 by lifting a shot past Greiss for the winner after taking in a spinning backhand pass from Draisaitl.

The first of two regular-season meetings between the teams also marked the first matchup since Edmonton traded Eberle to New York in June for Ryan Strome.

Each goalie made 17 saves before Draisaitl broke through to make it 1-0 1:59 into the second period. It was Draisaitl’s fourth goal of the season.

Eberle scored 2:44 later, snapping a shot from the right circle over Talbot’s glove.

BLUES 3, DEVILS 1: Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz scored in a 1:35 span bridging the second and third periods and St. Louis beat the host Devils, sending the Devils to their season-high third straight loss.

Jake Allen made 21 saves and Brayden Schenn scored into an empty net as the Blues beat the Devils for the eighth straight time. Schenn also had two assists, giving him six in the last two games.

Blake Coleman scored early in the first period for New Jersey, but he also was in the penalty box when Schwartz scored 32 seconds into the third period. Cory Schneider had 37 saves for the Devils, who are 0-2-1 in its last three.

“(The Blues) know how to stay in games with the high-end skill on the top two lines that can change the game on a dime like they did,” Schneider said. “Again, we have to stop this slide. We have to get out of this and stop it before it gets too deep. It’s three in a row. We haven’t quite played well enough to win. We have to find a way to nip this in the bud right now.” — AP AP
