School probe over grilling first-grader
ADMINISTRATORS at a Bronx elementary school are under investigation for interrogating a first-grader about allegations of drug use in his home, officials said Wednesday.
Last month, an after-school teacher pulled Ethan Gomez aside in front of other students and asked him if the adults in his home used drugs.
The teacher sniffed Ethan after the boy denied seeing any illegal activity. To add to his humiliation, other students made fun of him afterward.
A week later, Ethan told his mom he he was again questioned and sniffed, this time by Principal Ann Keegan.
“He’s been having panic attacks because of the incident. I’ve kept him home because he’s also not feeling well,” said Ariel Gomez, Ethan’s mother.
On Monday, Ethan’s aunt and mom met with Superintendent Maribel Hulla and other administrators at Public School 209 on E. 183rd St.
“(This incident) has been referred for investigation,” said a spokesman with the city Department of Education.
