Itching for skeeter vs. skeeter fight

THE FEDS HAVE given the green light to a company that says it wants to breed the worst mosquitoes out of existence.

MosquitoMate was approved by the Environmental Protection Agency to release nonbiting male mosquitoes — infected with egg-killing bacteria — to mate with the type of female mosquito that terrorizes humans in the summer.

This will reduce the amount of biting, disease-carrying lady mosquitoes. The company said trials in Kentucky, California and New York have led to an 80% reduction in biting mosquitoes. The engineered insects are licensed to sell in 20 states, including New York, and eventually will be offered for sale to property owners.
