being part of an MLB coaching staff in another capacity would be intriguing.
“Gary’s an incredibly talented guy that can be, in my opinion, an All-Star offensively and defensively. To me, he’s (Ivan) ‘Pudge’ Rodriguez waiting to happen. So that being said you have to find a way to do a better job with passed balls, blocking balls in the dirt, all of that stuff.
“But there’s so much talent there that I think he’s just knocking on the door of being great behind homeplate. So, that would be a fun challenge to have that much to work with. And I think more importantly it’s just getting Gary to realize that the defensive side of the game and working with the pitching staff is almost just as important as what he does when he’s swinging a bat, so it’s exciting.”
Jorge Posada, on the other hand, said he has no interest in coaching. “I’m having a good time at home,” Posada said.
Posada had been critical of Girardi’s lack of communication when he was a player. But when asked about Cashman citing similar reasons for making a change, Posada responded: “I don’t know. I have no idea what happened there.”
Posada, who also had defensive struggles early in his career, was supportive of Sanchez.
“There’s a guy that’s 24 years old and needs to keep improving and keep being who he is,” Posada said. “I think he’s going to get better. It’s a tough position. He caught some tough pitchers this year, and I thought he handled himself very well. He’s got a real bright future.”
