Red Sox prospect dies from cancer at 17

-

The Boston Red Sox say 17-year-old catching prospect Daniel Flores has died from complications during treatment for cancer.

The Red Sox said Flores died on Wednesday.

Flores was signed out of Venezuela in July. He was considered one of the top young players in the Red Sox farm system, though he had yet to play a game in the minors. Red Sox president of baseball operations

Dave Dombrowski called it “extremely saddening” to “see the life of a young man with so much promise cut short.”

Assistant general manager Eddie Romero said Flores was loved by those in the organization who knew him and called him “a natural leader” with “limitless potential.” Flores is survived by his mother and a sister.

Royals manager Ned Yost broke his pelvis after falling from a tree near his property, according to multiple reports.

Yost is recovering in an Atlanta hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The Royals manager was working on a tree stand at his home in Georgia when he fell, according to multiple reports.

Yost, who is entering the final year of his contract, recently finished his eighth season with the Royals. He owns a 629-632 managerial record with the team, including leading the Royals to a World Series championship in 2015. — Ari Gilberg

MELO FOUL STANDS

The NBA said Carmelo Anthony’s flagrant 2 foul will stand, but rescinded the flagrant issued to Russell Westbrook in Oklahoma City’s last game. The league also fined Westbrook, Paul

George and coach Billy Donovan $15,000 apiece for their criticisms of the officials after the call against Anthony on Sunday.

Both were unusual plays in that flagrant fouls are usually called against defensive players. Instead, Anthony and Westbrook were whistled for contact they created while attempting shots.

Anthony drove to the basket and elbowed center Jusuf Nurkic in the face on a shot that went in during the Thunder’s loss in Portland on Sunday. The basket was overturned after review and Anthony was hit with the automatic ejection.

Crew chief Rodney Mott said referees ruled the contact was excessive and not a natural basketball move.

Former Phoenix guard Goran Dragic scored a season-high 29 points in the visiting

Miami Heat’s 126-115 victory over the Suns. The Heat made 12 3-pointers, shot 53.1 percent overall and never trailed. The Suns lost their fourth straight.

Aron Baynes matched his career high with 21 points, Kyrie Irving scored 19 and the host Boston Celtics beat the Los Angeles

Lakers 107-96 for their 10th straight victory. Baynes also had eight rebounds and three assists, and Boston improved to 10-2 even as Al Horford sat out after being placed in concussion protocol earlier in the day.

Tobias Harris scored 23 points and the first-place Detroit Pistons won for the sixth time in seven games, beating the visiting Indiana Pacers 114-97. Andre Drummond added 14 points and 21 rebounds for the Pistons.
