Cracked wall stirs E. Side evacuation
DOZENS OF families were evacuated from their Upper East Side apartment building Thursday, after the structure was deemed structurally unstable.
The FDNY ordered 300 E. 96th St. evacuated at about 3 p.m., after a widening crack was found on a load-bearing wall, the department tweeted.
The crack is on an interior wall between the third and fourth floors, according to the city’s Department of Buildings website.
No injuries were reported as the building was cleared and E. 96th St. between First and Second Ave. was closed to traffic.
Residents complained of the building shaking in March and in July 2016, as a high-rise was being constructed next-door, city officials said.
In 2009, residents also complained that tunneling for the Second Ave. subway was causing the building to shake.
