Trump continues childish war of words with Kim

- Rich Schapiro

PRESIDENT TRUMP traded schoolyard insults with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un Saturday in the warring leaders’ latest verbal volley. “Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me ‘old,’ when I would NEVER call him ‘short and fat?’” Trump said in a Saturday night tweet dripping with sarcasm. “Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend — and maybe someday that will happen!” North Korea’s Foreign Ministry fired the first shot, ripping Trump for attempting to denuclearize it. The North Koreans cast Trump’s first foray to Asia as a “warmonger’s trip for confrontation with our country, trying to remove our selfdefensive nuclear deterrent.” The ministry accused Trump of trying to demonize North Korea and further wall it off from the international community. “Reckless remarks by an old lunatic like Trump will never scare us or stop our advance,” the ministry said. “On the contrary, all this makes us more sure that our choice to promote economic construction at the same time as building up our nuclear force is all the more righteous, and it pushes us to speed up the effort to complete our nuclear force.” Following a series of North Korean missile tests in the fall, Trump repeatedly referred to Kim as “little rocket man.” The hermetic kingdom has conducted no tests since Sept. 15. In a tough-talking speech delivered in South Korea on Tuesday, Trump delivered a stern warning to Kim. “Do not underestimate us. And do not try us,” he said. “The weapons you’re acquiring are not making you safer, they are putting your regime in grave danger. Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face.”
