Life’s a ditch for DWI guy
ORANGE CONES? What orange cones?
A drunken driver struck a construction worker in Staten Island then flipped his outof control car sideways into a trench early Saturday, cops said.
Keith Hayes, 28, was making a right turn from Midland Ave. onto Hylan Blvd. in Midland Beach when he blew past a series of construction cones and a flag man and barreled into a construction site about 12:50 a.m., police said.
His black 2015 Nissan Altima struck a 37-year-old worker before falling sideways into a ditch where workers were repairing a water main.
Medics rushed the struck construction worker to Staten Island University Hospital with two broken legs.
Several well-wishers who visited the hardhat in the hospital’s intensive care unit Saturday afternoon declined to comment.
The wasted wheelman blew a 0.163 - twice the legal limit - on a Breathalyzer test at the scene, according to cops.
Hayes, who lives in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, was charged with drunken driving, vehicular assault and reckless endangerment. His arraignment was pending Saturday night.
A woman who answered the door at Hayes’ apartment said she was too busy to speak with a Daily News reporter, as shouting from inside the home echoed into the hallway.
“There usually is a lot of yelling but I don’t get involved in their business,” said one neighbor, who asked not to be named. “Honestly I can’t say I’ve ever seen (Hayes) drinking. But I try and keep to myself.”
