Outrage spreads across the globe as Nutella maker changes recipe

- BY JOE DZIEMIANOWICZ

It’s being called #NutellaGate. Nutella, the beloved chocolatehazelnut spread made by Italian manufacturer Ferrero, has tweaked its recipe and fans stormed social media to express their discontent. The sugar content has risen from 55.9% to 56.3%, while the milk content has gone from 7.5% to 8.7%, according to Hamburg Consumer Protection Centre’s Facebook page. Cacao is now listed further down on the label. Result: a lighter shade of Nutella.

“OMG!! They are changing the recipe of #Nutella!!! NOOOOOOOO HOW DARE THEY!! Leave the sugar & coco alone!!!” posted @XGemma_ByrneX, who was clearly in sugar shock — and not in a good way. By boosting milk and sugar content, the consumer group suggests that the move is about saving money on more expensive cocoa. The sweetening switcheroo hasn’t been taken well by health-conscious consumers who believe that sugar levels should be going down, not up.

Ferrero acknowledged the recipe change. “The quality, the sourcing and all other aspects of Nutella ingredients remain the same,” the company noted last week.

?? ?? It’s a different color! Has a different taste! This can’t be happening! Nutella lovers freak out.
