Ryan revenge tour

-

TAMPA — Fear The Beard (less). Sort of. A clean-shaven Ryan Fitzpatrick exacted revenge against the Jets Sunday, even though he didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard in Sunday’s 15-10 win over his former team. He was neither FitzMagic nor FitzTragic, but he made timely plays to help the Buccaneers put away Gang Green.

“In the grand scheme of things, when I’m all said and done,” said Fitzpatrick. “It’s definitely an important win for me.”

Fitzpatrick went 17-for-34 for 187 yards, one touchdown and one interception in his first start replacing an injured Jameis Winston (shoulder). He capped a pivotal 15-play fourth-quarter drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Charles Sims that effectively sealed the Jets’ fate.

“I played okay,” Fitzpatrick said. “I didn’t play great by any stretch of the imagination. We won the game and I’m getting too old to worry about that other stuff. My job right now is… to try to grind out wins.”

It was fitting that Fitzpatrick would make his first start with his new team against a team that went on a recent twoyear roller coaster with him. The Jets nearly made the playoffs during a surprising 10-win season with Fitzpatrick in 2015 before everything became unhinged.

“It was kind of emotional standing on that side (and) looking across,” Fitzpatrick said. “I had a great two years there in terms of the people that I met”

Fitzpatrick won the rare Double Revenge game that also featured Josh McCown against his former team. The pair

of journeymen signal callers who have combined to play for 15 teams over 28 seasons didn’t wow anyone Sunday, but Fitzpatrick did more than McCown to snap his team’s five-game slide.

“That’s what Ryan is: He’s a get-it-done kind of guy,” Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter said.

The bottom line in this bottom line business: Fitzpatrick prevailed on this day.

“He did enough to win the game,” linebacker Demario Davis said.

Cornerback Morris Claiborne didn’t return after aggravating a foot sprain during the Buccaneers’ second drive of the game. The veteran missed last week’s game after suffering the injury in a loss against the Falcons in Week 8.

“I felt better than I did,” Claiborne said. “I really wasn’t trying to miss anything. So, I wanted to give it a shot to see where it was and see if I could make it through the game. But I also didn’t want to go out there and put bad film out or go get beat where we lose the game (because of me)…. I don’t feel like it got any worse.”

Claiborne, who said he has a sprain at the top of his foot, will have two weeks to heal before the Jets play the Panthers after the bye.

The Jets committed eight more penalties for 77 yards in what has been a recurring theme to this up-and-down season. Todd Bowles’ club is the second most penalized team in the league behind Seattle.

“We finished with eight,” Bowles said. “It felt like it was more than that. But they keep setting us back and we got to find a way to fix them.”

Bowles’ team, which has 81 penalties for 739 yards this season, committed three penalties in the first four-and-a-half minutes of the game.

“There were a couple penalties out there today that I felt like were bulls---,” Claiborne said. “I mean, I felt like shouldn’t have been thrown.”

Mo Wilkerson, who showed some signs of a pulse in the past couple games, finished with one tackle. Leonard Williams was credited with his first full sack of the season (the Jets’ only sack of the game).
