Judging Roy Moore’s character

-

Denver: Please stop using the word “date” as it pertains to Roy Moore and teenage girls (“Roy Moore urged to quit Senate race amid claims he dated teens,” Nov. 13). A 30-plus-yearold man taking a minor to his private property and fondling her or himself is not a “date.” It’s sexual assault. Please do not allow the right-wing commentators to frame this otherwise. Hilarie Portell Brooklyn: I am in total agreement with Mike Lupica’s sentiments in his column about Roy Moore (“Righteous pervert in a pathetic race to bottom,” Nov. 13). But his Catholicism is off. He mistakenly refers to the Immaculate Conception, which is Mary’s conception without original sin. Lupica is referring to the virgin birth, which is a different dogma, though often mistaken as the Immaculate Conception.

Carmen Casas Panama City Beach, Fla.: I guess that in the Daily News’ eyes, being accused means being guilty. So if I said you were guilty of chasing me as a young boy, then you are automatically guilty. In today’s politics, it isn’t a proven fact, but just a mere accusation, that gets you in hot water. Especially from the left. Innocent until proven guilty: Look it up, and hopefully you can be smart enough to understand it.

Terry Weekly Raleigh, N.C.: Although I feel very strongly that people falsely accused have a very difficult time even when they are innocent, the answer is obvious: Women are now being taken seriously. The President made it clear that powerful, rich, celebrity and infamous people can and do grab women by the private parts — and verbally, emotionally, physically and psychologically harm women, men and children. You know the saying: Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Furthermore, in Southern and agrarian cultures, children were considered women at about the age of 15. These stereotypes have lived for generations. Frankly, I believe Moore is guilty. The biggest question is: Will these sexual abusers be held accountable or not? Robin Grant

Guilt all around

West Babylon, L.I.: How dare Alabama state Auditor Jim Zeigler proclaim a moral equivalence between an adult officer of the court, preying on a child at the heart of her parents’ custody battle, and St. Joseph, called upon by heaven to the care of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, the Son of God (“Using Jesus to defend accused pedophile Roy Moore is wrong,” column, Nov. 10)? The darkness of this blasphemous comparison casts such a shadow over the future of Alabama and our nation that we should all fear judgment. Roy Moore will ultimately face that judgment, have no doubt. That the people of Alabama should be made accomplices, enablers and excusers of such base, primal, animal crimes and sins against the innocents whom Jesus charged us to defend — that is an assault on all of us that will not stay unspoken of for 40 years. If he ascends to the halls of the Senate of the United States of America, the shame will be on us all. Brian D. Cunningham

Staten Island: Re “Tax elite colleges, help the rest” (Op-Ed, Nov. 10): The proposal to tax endowments makes sense, but what needs to be also noted is that contributions to colleges and universities are tax-deductible. Therefore, the government is also subsidizing the person making the contribution. A good start would be to disallow a deduction for the contribution.

The bloom is off the Rosie

Suffern, N.Y.: In the Daily News’ puff piece on Rosie O’Donnell (“Everything’s coming up Rosie,” Nov. 5), you trumpet her feud with Donald Trump, but you don’t mention her obscene history of being a 9/11 truther or her defense of Iran’s seizing of British sailors. When a woman who is openly gay defends homosexual killers, what is that supposed to mean?

Spies like him

Bayside: Thank God for the Daily News! Without the article in the Nov. 1 issue (“Israel wants a spy”), we would never have known about Jonathan Pollard. He is the convicted ex-U.S. Navy intelligence analyst sent to prison in 1987 for espionage, and sentenced to life in prison. Now that he has been paroled and granted Israeli citizenship, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants President Trump to allow him to move to Israel to join his wife. This is a disgrace and a slap in the face to all those who serve their country faithfully every day. It must not happen! Tom and Connie Dowd

Hang him high

Bronx: Why don’t we wrap Sayfullo Saipov in an American flag and hang him on a lamppost in Manhattan? Why put him in jail, where he’ll get three meals a day and a bed to sleep in? He doesn’t deserve to be treated like a human being. He’s an animal.

It’s war

Bellerose: With all the laws we have protecting terrorists, I now know what the initials U.S.A. really stand for: United Saps of America. John Calcaterra

Do as I say

Woodside: President Trump says “Make America great again” and “bring jobs back to America,” yet he asks for and receives 70 visas to hire foreign workers at Mar-aLago. His reasoning for this? “Other hotels do the same thing.” Well, my mama used to tell me, “I don’t care what others are doing, the answer is no!”

Falling for it

Oak Ridge, N.J.: To Voicer Giavanna Gesselli: If you think President Trump is for the people, you need a drink. He’s only out for his ego. To Voicer Mary Young: Killing wild horses is like killing America. Anyone who supports this should be locked up forever in a dirty horse barn.

King Donald

Manhattan: “I’m the only one that matters” in setting U.S. foreign policy, says the Trump bum. This means that the Trump bum thinks of himself as a dictator. Reba Shimansky

Hold the line

Troy, N.Y.: All of this in the NFL could have been avoided if the owners of the 49ers had any guts. When Colin Kaepernick would not stand for the national anthem and wore socks that depicted cops as pigs, they should have sent a simple message: You don’t stand, you don’t play. M.F. Visk

Kaepernick vs. success

Somers Point, N.J.: Colin Kaepernick and his kneeling allies have succeeded in besmirching, denigrating and insulting every African-American, male or female, who is successful in life. These people are doctors, lawyers, professors, nurses, entertainers, military service members, teachers, computer operators and athletes. These African-Americans, in each of their occupations, earned their success through diligent study and hard work. Yes, all lives are important, but don’t support any Caucasians or African-Americans who don’t respect the laws of our country.

57 channels, nothing on

Bayside: As a channel-hopper, I seem to spend evenings switching channels, trying to find quality AP programming, which we enjoyed in days gone by. Sometimes I actually find something, albeit with endless commercials. By the time they have subsided, I am at a loss, wondering what it was that I was watching in the first place. But wait, it gets even better. Every month, I enjoy the privilege of receiving a bill for this unique service. Sarah Alboher

Closing time

Flushing: We have enough people here. We don’t need any more. Let’s stop all immigration for at least five years. There’s nothing these immigrants can do that we can’t do ourselves. We may be keeping some people out who would become good Americans, but we would also be keeping people out who only want to do harm. When we start taking them in again they must be carefully screened and also sponsored by someone so they don’t go on the welfare rolls. I’m a lucky person. I was born in the U.S.A.

Blame and shame

Ledgewood, N.J.: I believe human sexuality is a gift from God. Any restriction of or prohibition on human sexuality is a corruption of that gift. However, irrational devotion to laws that define “sexual assault” can criminalize courting. Do these socalled victims really believe that they have indeed been led into sexual situations against their will, or are they just confused by a possibly overly amorous suitor?
