Two-way player OK with Cash
ORLANDO — While Brian Cashman wouldn’t address Shohei Otani directly — given that he’s still under contract in Japan — the Yankees GM did address the possibility of having a two-way player on his roster.
“Generally, if you have someone capable of doing something like that, it gives you more roster flexibility and roster choices,” Cashman said Monday at the GM Meetings. “It’s kind of like having a 26th man when everyone else is playing with 25, just because of the duality of that particular player.
The Bombers might be reluctant to allow Otani to do that if he were to sign a massive deal. But because they only have to give him a $3.25 million signing bonus to get him in what is essentially a college recruiting process — assuming MLB, MLPA and Nippon Professional Baseball can come to a posting agreement — there are no indications that they’d be unwilling to let him start on the mound and DH.
