‘S.W.A.T.’ HOT SHOT SIGMAN

Sigman relishes complex role as LAPD capt.

- BY ROSY CORDERO

Stephanie Sigman rules the roost in the male-dominated “S.W.A.T.,” but will her character lose it all for love?

The Mexican-born actress stars as Capt. Jessica Cortez on the freshman CBS drama based on the 1975 series of the same name. The Thursday night show follows a Los Angeles-based S.W.A.T. team led by newly promoted Sgt. Daniel (Hondo) Harrelson (Shemar Moore) — with whom Cortez is having an affair.

Expect to see more of Cortez battling with her feelings for Hondo while trying not to lose her job — or her credibility around the office.

“Jessica is a rule follower,” Sigman tells Viva. “She has earned everything that she has with hard work… (but) things change for her when she starts seeing Hondo.

“That’s what I love about this character — she isn’t perfect. A part of her doesn’t want things to happen between them. As his boss, she should not get involved with him. Her job is sacred to her and she could lose it. And when you have worked so hard for something in a country that is not your own by birth but has become your home, you know you could lose it all. She is very conflicted.” Sigman, who appeared on Netflix’s “Narcos” and FX’s “The Bridge, and was the first Mexican actress to play a Bond girl in the movies, in 2015’s “Spectre,” has herself worked hard to become a TV industry rarity — a Latina in a starring role. “We live in a very diverse country and the reality is that we need more people of color on television and film,” says Sigman. “I’m hoping playing a role like Jessica Cortez will help the world realize everything that we bring to the table — and hopefully that’ll affect casting in the future. “Not just because we look diverse, but also because of how we sound,” Sigman adds. “There are so many languages spoken in the United States, especially Spanish. As a result, we should be way more accepting of actors with accents.”
