Don reverses rollback on elephant ban
FORGET IT.
After widespread outrage, the President announced in a Friday night tweet that he’s shelving his administration’s decision to reverse an Obama-era ban on the import of elephant trophies into the U.S.
“Put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as I review all conservation facts,” Trump tweeted. “Under study for years. Will update soon with Secretary Zinke. Thank you!”
The flip-flop comes a day after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determined that a ban was unnecessary on the import of elephants hunted in Zimbabwe and Zambia, setting off a wave of criticism from conservationists and even some members of the GOP.
The FWS justified the reversal by arguing that it would actually help the longevity of the species.
“Importing limited numbers of hunted elephants from Zimbabwe and Zambia into the United States will help protect wild elephants for future generations,” the FSW statement read.
