Signs of the times

They don’t teach cursive in New York schools much nowadays (see neighboring column), but they used to. So why can’t Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, a grad of Riverdale Country Day in the Bronx, sign his name on the currency? Instead he neatly printed each letter on the money. And why couldn’t his predecessor as treasury secretary, Jack Lew, a grad of Forest Hills High School (and Riverdale resident) sign his name like an ordinary human? Lew’s signature was a series of little zeros. He had to practice, practice and practice again to get something halfway legible on the money.

Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz, a grad of Bronx Science, represents Riverdale, can sign his name like a grownup — and has a bill to get more public schools to teach script. It would be worth the money.
