METS LOOK TO LAND KINSLER:

- BY KRISTIE ACKERT

The Mets have talked to the Tigers about second baseman Ian Kinsler, an industry source confirmed. The talks were described as “preliminary,” and doing their “due diligence,” the source said, confirming a report by the MLB Network’s Jon Morosi.

The Tigers have also had talks with the Angels about the second baseman and according to reports are drawing interest from several teams.

Kinsler, 35, hit .236 with 22 home runs and 52 RBI in 139 games for the Tigers last season. One of the veteran assets remaining on a team that has shifted its focus to rebuilding and the future, the Tigers would like to move his $11 million salary for 2018.

And while the Mets are in the market for a second baseman, that salary — and what they could send back in terms of prospects could be an obstacle, the industry source said. The Mets have indicated that their 2018 Opening Day payroll will be lower than the $154 million they opened 2017 with. The Mets, who sent Michael Fulmer to the Tigers in 2015 for Yoenis Cespedes, also don’t have many near major-league ready prospects to help swing many deals this season. They have holes in the outfield and bullpen to fill as well this winter.

But second base is a definite issue that the Mets need to solve before spring training, as GM Sandy Alderson said last week at the GM meetings. Kinsler is a veteran that the Mets could use in the lineup and a veteran presence that they need in the clubhouse.

At second base, the Mets right now have T.J. Rivera, who is not expected to be ready for the start of the season after having Tommy John surgery, Wilmer Flores and Gavin Cecchini to chose from internally.

Jose Reyes and Neil Walker, who the Mets traded to the Brewers in a payroll dump in August, are freeagent options the Mets have discussed.

Walker, who was upset when contract extension talks with the Mets were shut down this spring, is said to be looking for a multi-year deal.

Reyes, who has expressed his desire to stay with the Mets and his offseason home in Long Island, would probably be a cost-effective option at second base as well.
