Take a bow, Thamara Jean

-

Thirty-two young men and women from the United States are off to Oxford next year, having just been tapped as Rhodes Scholars, the most prestigious academic honor a college student can get. One of them, set to study political theory, is Thamara Jean, the 22-year-old pride of the City University. Jean — the eighth Rhodes in CUNY’s storied history, and its first since 2011 — is at Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College. Before that, she went to Edward R. Murrow High School and Brooklyn’s IS 78 and PS 193. Her parents are Haitian immigrants; dad’s a synagogue groundskeeper, mom’s a nurse. More quintessentially American, more quintessentially New York, it does not get.
