Cops hit for lapses in LGBT cases
THE NYPD doesn’t properly track complaints filed against cops by lesbian, gay and transgender people, according to a new city report.
And too few officers have received mandatory training on new patrol guide rules designed to improve the NYPD’s relationship with the gay community, according to the report issued Tuesday by the city Department of Investigation.
The NYPD changed its patrol guide, which lays out department procedures, in 2012 to improve interactions with gay, lesbian and transgender people.
Among the changes: Cops are required to address people by their preferred name, not their given name. The changes also banned strip searches for the purpose of determining gender.
Just six of the NYPD’s 77 precincts have received training on the new protocols, the report found.
The training has otherwise been limited to academy recruits and newly promoted sergeants, lieutenants and captains.
