I kicked that cat
And I’m getting new kicks — punk celebrates no-jail deal
AN INFAMOUS Brooklyn man who kicked a homeless cat into the air for giggles pleaded guilty Tuesday, got no jail time — and then boasted he was going to buy himself a new pair of shoes.
It’s been more than 31/2 years since Andre Robinson was caught on cell phone video wearing a pair of red and white sneakers and kicking a kitten almost 10 feet into the air on Fulton St. near Patchen Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Robinson, 24, was facing up to a year on Rikers Island for the cruel behavior to the innocent gray and white feline that was later adopted and named King.
“Imma go home and buy me some good shoes,” Robinson said when asked if he had anything to say to the animal rights activists who were disappointed he wasn’t sentenced to jail time for the cruel kick.
After years of delays because of Robinson’s alleged other criminal activity, including a stint in a Virginia jail for credit card fraud, he pleaded guilty to a single animal cruelty misdemeanor charge of failure to provide proper sustenance.
Brooklyn Criminal Court Judge Jane Tully overrode prosecutors’ offer to send Robinson to jail every weekend for two months.
Instead, Robinson was granted a conditional discharge and ordered to do 10 days of community service. He is prohibited from owning any animal for three years. Robinson has a pending case charging him with possession of the drug MDMA, better known as Ecstasy or Molly, on Oct. 5 near Dean St. and Ralph Ave in Crown Heights. If convicted, he faces up to a year in jail. If he violates Tully’s agreement, he could still get jail time for the animal cruelty. Robinson’s attorney, Lisa Procton, handed the judge letters from two nonprofit organizations her client volunteered with while the case was pending. “Animals are the most vulnerable creatures. This is upsetting,” said Margaret Lee, 64, an animal activist.
