Janoris’ season picked off

- BY JOHN HEALY

Janoris Jenkins’ tumultuous season has come to an end. The Giants corner underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair an injured ankle and will be placed on the injured reserve, the team announced.

Jenkins has battled an ankle issue most of the season and re-injured it again last Thursday when he returned an interception for a touchdown in the Giants’ 20-10 loss to Washington.

Jenkins was suspended for a game earlier this season for violating team policy when he failed to arrive for practice following the team’s bye week and did not notify the team of his absence.

A week after his suspension he was highly criticized for what appeared to be a half-hearted effort on a few tackles in a 31-21 loss to NFC-worst 49ers.

Jenkins responded with interceptions in back-to-back games but will not get the chance to finish out the season.

Jenkins, 29, signed a five-year, $62 million deal with $28.8 million fully guaranteed with the Giants before the 2016 season.

If the Giants decide to cut Jenkins before June 1, 2018, they would eat $6 million in dead money next season but save $7 million in cap space.

The Giants replaced Jenkins’ spot by signing defensive tackle Khyri Thornton to the roster.

Thornton, the fifth defensive player signed by the Giants this week, played four games for the Lions this season and recorded four tackles before being released Nov. 21. He was suspended the first six games of the season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

GETTING AHEAD

Sterling Shepard was back at practice on Wednesday after missing the last two games due to migraines.

Shepard said he used to experience them as a child, but he has never dealt with something quite like this.

“A few days after the San Francisco game, it just kind of hit me hard,” Shepard said. “I tried practicing all week with it without any contact and I just had to make the decision not to go in during the (Kansas City) game.”

Shepard said his biggest concern was that it would just not go away.

“I just didn’t know what was going on,” he said.

INJURY ROUNDUP

DE Romeo Okwara (knee) is expected to return to practice this week for the first time since being placed on the IR on Oct. 17.

DT Damon Harrison was not practicing on Wednesday and doing work on the stationary bike. OL Justin Pugh (back) and LB Jonathan Casillas (neck/ wrist) also did not practice despite warming up with the team.

LB B.J. Goodson (ankle), who has not played since Week 7, was practicing again while LB Calvin Munson (quad) was limited.
