Google repairs emoji bloopers

- BY JOE DZIEMIANOWICZ

Amonth after Google faced blowback from its flawed burger emoji, the company has put the cheese where it belongs. Finally. Google CEO Sundar Pichai promised in an Oct. 28 tweet that he would “drop everything else” in order to address the controversial placement of the slice of yellow American cheese below the patty, not above it.

As first reported by Emojipedia, Google’s updated cheeseburger emoji is stacked in the proper order from top to bottom: bun, lettuce, tomato, cheese, meat, bun. This change applies to the forthcoming Android 8.1 release.

Twitter user Thomas Baekdal first pointed out the weird stacking order.

“I think we need to have a discussion about how Google’s burger emoji is placing the cheese underneath the burger, while Apple puts it on top,” he wrote.

The post brought tens of thousands of likes and retweets.

Emojipedia also noted tweaks to other foodie emojis, including a Swiss cheese wedge with holes that now seem more real and not painted on.

Another cheers-worthy correction: A beer emoji no longer has froth atop a half-filled mug — the new glass will be filled to the brim.
