Trump and Kim are peas in a pod

-

Vancouver: This is probably the most dangerous era the world has endured. For 70 years, countries with weapons of mass destruction have held each other at bay via mutually assured destruction. With the loose cannon North Korea just a sideshow throwing tantrums to get attention, we got to feel we were pretty safe. Who knew it was possible for another immature, insecure cannon to become a head of state and just the ticket to break the long peace from the insanity of centuries of international war?

These narcissists are bait for one another, and they are having the time of their lives dangling it in front of each other. Surely there are enough sane leaders in the world to cease with the silly diplomacy and instead of preparing for the worst, to step up to President Trump and stop him from pressing the nuclear button.

Of course, that should happen in the United Nations, but there we unfortunately have the Permanent Five, one of which is the U.S., who block all reason and logic to satisfy their own purposes.

We have no kind of security now. The level of instability in two accidental leaders could result in any insanity their troubled minds can envisage. The American Congress and the people who stubbornly and obtusely maintain support for Trump will have this to answer for if Trump himself is not held at bay and stopped from engaging in nuclear war, just what he is dying to do and call a legacy. Suck it up

Manhattan: When will the Daily News stop (“Donald Trump is a madman,” editorial, Nov. 30)? Everyone gets you hate Trump. He is, however, our President and will be until 2021. If you care about this country, you will support the office, if not the man who holds it. Tearing him down and undermining his presidency can only undermine our nation.

Compare legacies

Bronx: We know President Trump hates President Obama because Trump is a racist. It’s a fact he proves every single day. He has a seemingly psychotic obsession with the former President and is trying to undo all his policies. By continuing the racist birther lie, he wants us to believe Obama wasn’t really the President because he wasn’t eligible to be. I suspect Trump is insecure about his small hands and what that implies. He’s jealous because it’s very clear that Barack Obama has a bigger . . . brain.

They had to know

Brooklyn: It’s funny; most offices are water-cooler gossip central. I find it hard to believe that no one at NBC knew what Matt Lauer was doing. The saying “if you see something, say something” applies here. Mariann Tepedino

Prairie Home Travesty

Birmingham, Ala.: I am disgusted with Minnesota Public Radio’s shabby treatment of Garrison Keillor. I am a Democrat, but many Republicans here in Alabama also enjoy him. I fear they will look upon the travesty of Keillor’s firing as further justification for their wrong-headed support of likely child molester and certain nincompoop Roy Moore, who very soon may be elected to the U.S. Senate.

Florence Blair Manhattan: Every time I see one of these letters about voting for Republicans because they’re anti-abortion, I wonder whether the writer has ever noticed that Republicans are far more anxious about fetuses than about actual babies and their mothers. This country has a shamefully low rating when it comes to infant and maternal deaths, in comparison to other civilized countries — mostly because we don’t have a national health care system. Women should have choice in more than just whether or not to carry a fetus to term; many women have very limited choices, and they and their children will suffer as a result. (And remember, as they grow up, those kids will also deal with more pollution, less education and a more dangerous world in general, after Trump and the Republicans carry out their ideological plans — assuming the country survives the current administration.) Not the finest

Oakland, Calif.: The response of this officer is unprofessional, unacceptable and uncalled for (“Florida cop tells man who shot him that he’ll need a lot of lube in prison,” Nov. 30). It speaks to some of law enforcement’s willingness to look the other way when crimes are committed in certain instances. The offender will pay with the rest of his life behind bars, and this was the most intelligent thing the officer could find to say? What a lack of self-respect and dignity.

Tykes out of parks

Astoria: So now the brilliant leaders of our city and state agree that it’s all right to build a huge pre-K on park property in Flushing Meadows park, rationalizing it under the guise of promoting pre-K STEM education (“Andy OKs huge pre-K in Queens,” Dec. 1). Am I the only person perplexed by this decision? Many pre-K students aren’t even pottytrained. STEM? Give me a break. If this school were proposed in Manhattan on Central Park property, the outrage would be deafening. It’s bad enough that hotels have turned into homeless shelters under de Blasio; park property is sacred and should remain so. James Long

A little respect

Westwood, N.J.: Re “Americans arrested after baring butts at Bangkok Buddhist temple” (Nov. 29): Thank goodness they were arrested. When people don’t have respect for other people’s religion, they should be fined. Americans don’t rule the world. They should be careful to think before they act. Rosemary Shashoua

Old Zionist tricks

Brighton, U.K.: I know nothing of Linda Sarsour, but as a British Jew, I do have some comments on Susan Shapiro’s Op-Ed (“Old school hate at the New School,” Nov. 26). Firstly, it fails to acknowledge that the Palestinians live in the world’s only apartheid state. Yes, there is only one Jewish state, but it is a state of Jewish supremacy where segregation in land, housing and education, to name but a few, is taken for granted. The idea of religious states went out with the French Revolution in 1789. Yes, Islamic states should be condemned, but there is a difference. Saudi Arabia and Iran use Islam to justify persecuting Muslims. In Israel, being Jewish makes you privileged. All of Shapiro’s attacks boil down to guilt by association. Is there anything Sarsour has said that is anti-Semitic? If not, these are just the same old Zionist tropes. It is perfectly valid to say that you can’t be a Zionist and a feminist. Zionism is a form of racism. Tony Greenstein

Big blew it

Middletown, Conn.: I am so upset about the benching of Eli Manning. It’s not entirely his fault the team is terrible. He has no offensive line. He has no one to throw to and he has no one to block for him. Why are they making him the sole scapegoat? If John Mara claims Ben McAdoo didn’t handle this correctly, then why doesn’t he just fire him now and let Eli play? Just shameful.

Child neglect

Monsey, N.Y.: I take issue with Rabbi David Niederman’s Op-Ed on Hasidic schools (“The ugly attack on N.Y. yeshivas,” Nov.

Believe it

AP/REUTERS 15). I agree with him that there are a great variety of Jewish educational institutions, some of which are meeting state educational requirements. But it’s simple; some Hasidic schools follow the requirements and some don’t. The ones that don’t are breaking the law and denying children their right to a quality education. Niederman addresses the rights of parents to choose the educational institution their children attend, but he does not mention children’s rights to an education. I know a man who attended Hasidic schools and made the decision to leave the Hasidic community. He currently has a wife and three young children and is working several low-paying jobs, barely scraping by. If he had been given a secular education, it is unlikely that he would be in this unfortunate situation. Additionally, this path that may Hasidim take leaves them reliant on government welfare programs. This is an unnecessary strain on the welfare system, which should be used by people in desperate situations with nowhere to turn, not as a means of income as some Hasidim use it. This could be easily avoided with education.

Leah Rosenberg Howell, N.J.: To Voicer Salvatore Cannavo: I read and reread your letter and am still in total disbelief that 1) you actually wrote such an idiotic sexist letter and 2) that the Daily News would even choose to publish said letter. Carole Dowd
