Hall stuns Louisville; Herm takes over at ASU

-

Desi Rodriguez had a season-high 29 points, including an off-balance bank shot with eight seconds remaining, to rally visiting Seton Hall to a 79-77 upset of No. 17 Louisville on Sunday. After Deng Adel’s leaner tied it at 77, the Pirates ran the clock down before Rodriguez got the ball and dribbled left. He fired a hard shot off the glass for the lead in a tense, back-and-forth game between former Big East rivals. The Pirates made their final seven shots.

Quentin Snider’s 3-point attempt for the winner missed with 4 seconds left and Rodriguez got the rebound to spark an oncourt celebration for Seton Hall (7-1). Khadeen Carrington scored 18 points, Myles Powell had 13 including a key 3-pointer and Angel Delgado had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Pirates. Adel had 20 points and Snider 15 for Louisville (4-2), which led 59-52 midway through the second half but lost its second straight.

SUN DEVILS HIRE HERM

Arizona State’s bold move is official. The Sun Devils announced the hiring of former Jets coach and ESPN analyst Herm Edwards as football coach Sunday night, ushering in a new, unexpected era for the program.

A news conference to introduce Edwards is scheduled for this morning and his hiring is pending approval by the Arizona Board of Regents.

Edwards spent the last nine years as an NFL analyst for ESPN and has not coached in college since serving as a San Jose State assistant in 1989. He’s also served as a coach for the Under Armour All-American game for the past eight years, working with some of the nation’s top high school recruits.

UCONN RALLIES IN 4TH TO BEAT IRISH

Kaatie Lou Samuelson scored 18 points, Azura Stevens added 17 and top-ranked UConn rallied from an 11-point fourthquarter deficit to beat No. 3 Notre Dame 80-71 on Sunday in the Jimmy V Classic in Hartford. The Huskies (7-0) trailed 65-54 early in the fourth quarter before scoring 21 of the next 26 points, much to the delight of the sellout crowd of 15,558 fans.

Stevens scored 10 points during the game-changing run. Her layup gave the Huskies a 69-68 lead — their first since the second quarter. Kia Nurse scored seven points during the burst and hit her 13th consecutive 3-pointer over the past three games. Her layup with 3:51 left gave UConn a 71-70 advantage after Arike Ogunbowale had briefly given the Irish (7-1) a 70-69 edge. Nurse then hit another layup off a tip from Stevens and the Irish couldn’t recover. Ogunbowale’s hoop was the lone points for the Irish until she hit one free throw with 16 seconds remaining that made it 77-71. The Irish had only one basket in the final 7:48.
