Faulty alarm doomed boy in Qns. blaze
A QUEENS blaze that killed a 12-year-old boy was accidentally set by someone smoking in the apartment, which lacked a working fire alarm, investigators said Monday.
Thomas Curley died from smoke inhalation three hours after flames erupted in the apartment on Ocean Promenade near Beach 123rd St. in Rockaway Park around 3:05 a.m. Sunday, according to officials. He was rushed to Nassau Community Medical Center, but could not be saved.
Fire marshals determied that the fire “was accidental,” with the “smoke alarm not operational,” the FDNY tweeted.
Heartbroken neighbors described Thomas (photo) as a good-natured student at Scholars’ Academy who was learning to play the trumpet.
“He’s a well-mannered, good kid from a good family,” said Justin Martin, 33. “If I ever had a son, I’d want him to be just like that.”
