Sins of the statue commission

-

Bronx: The co-chairs of the mayor’s monuments commission underscore that their job is to ensure that monuments “are in keeping with the values that New Yorkers share” and laud their own efforts to “hear directly from the people” (“Moving beyond the monument war,” Op-Ed, Dec. 1). While residents of each borough turned out in force, the commission members barely showed, with not even half of the appointees present to listen to New Yorkers. Not to mention that nearly half of the commission members are not even native New Yorkers.

Co-Chair Darren Walker heads the Ford Foundation, which has done admirable work, but the hypocrisy abounds since Henry Ford was an unabashed bigot. Has he inveighed against the Ford statue in Michigan? The commission is on a fool’s errand carried out by cultural elitists who are on a pretentious exercise that will never get close to determining the values of New Yorkers. Philip Foglia

No friend

Great Neck, L.I.: President Trump, the Great Pretender, pretends he is on your side. But deep down below he is always only on two sides. His and the large corporations. Fred Feingold

Don the conqueror

Katonah, N.Y.: Wake up, America! Can’t you see that Donald Trump doesn’t give a damn about the middle class and the working poor? He’s in it to increase his bottom line and enhance his ego. His tax cuts are to benefit him, his rich brethren and corporations. He’s robbing the poor to give to the rich and taking away health insurance while playing golf, something he constantly criticized Barack Obama for doing. Add hypocrite to his long list of faults. He’s just what Bruce Springsteen sings about in “Badlands”: “Poor man wants to be rich, rich man wants to be king, king ain’t satisfied till he rules everything.” I fear for this country. He’s ruining America and all that we stand for.

Blowing through

Levittown, L.I.: The weather bureau said the 2017 hurricane season is over. However, the political hurricane season continues 24/7, and it’s a disaster called Donald. John Di Milia

Flushing: Ignorance is bliss and curiosity killed the cat. Many of us would not have known of the recent development in SoHo had it not been publicized as a news item. It’s not a noteworthy item.

Charles J. Lercara

King Paul

Clifton, N.J.: When will House Speaker Paul Ryan stop bowing down to the dictator in the People’s House? If he keeps on, soon he will be beneath the soles of his shoes. This may be his last term in office if he keeps bowing down.

Killer instincts

Pennsauken, N.J.: Here we go again. If the killing of innocent babies in their school didn’t change any laws, why do you think a shooting at a concert will change anything? To all the politicians who have been bought by the NRA, including that idiot (excuse me, moron) in the Oval Office and his family, the blood of these people is on your hands. That maniac may have pulled the trigger, but you supplied him with the guns and ammo. I hope you sleep well. Janet Hildebrand

Keep the bad guys out

Staten Island: How many more innocent people will have to die over the need for diversity pushed upon us by our politicians? It’s time to stop being politically correct and put the safety of our citizens first. The press conference Mayor de Blasio and Gov. Cuomo had after the Halloween terrorist attack was sickening, and it’s frightening to think that our fate as a city is in their hands. It’s time to stop being oblivious to the threats these radical terrorists impose on us. Empire State Building tributes, tighter gun laws and speeches about the resiliency of New Yorkers will not prevent another attack. Focus on taking real action and tackle the problem head-on with extreme vetting. The safety of Americans comes first and we should never apologize for that.Lauren Hornek

We the suckers

Bellerose: With all the laws we have protecting terrorists, I now know what the initials U.S.A. really stand for: United Saps of America. John Calcaterra

Verdict on the judge

Scarsdale, N.Y.: Jeanine Pirro, who do you think you are, speeding 119 mph and not charged because you’re an ex-district attorney and judge? Really, perhaps you ought to look into the mirror — when people like you throw Hillary Clinton, minorities and Democratic leaders under the bus. They should have locked your sorry self in jail.

Dollar Bill

Brooklyn: Congratulations, New Yorkers! You’ve reelected the best mayor money can buy.

Christina C. Anderson

Get off your tush

Oakland Gardens: G-d helps those who help themselves. To those who have become couch potatoes because of illness or depression: Move your butts and become happy campers again, or dig your own graves. For those who are successful: Congratulations on going to hell and back. I having been a stroke victim 11 years ago can attest to that.

Ungodly transformation

Bronx: Society has changed completely. Now up is down, and left is right. Few people realize it, but it will become apparent in due time. Each person is acting as his own god because society has come to believe that the God of heaven doesn’t matter and doesn’t exist. So it’s all “Ha, ha, ha” and “Ho, ho, ho,” we’ll go our own way whichever we choose. Because we have a right. And all people are equal. So nobody tells me anything. And bang, bang, bang, you’re dead. I’ll even go into the holy church and blaspheme right and left. And God’ll do nothing because he ain’t there. But the Bible says God will hold them in derision (Psalm 2). He who sits in heaven will laugh. The Lord and His anointed, the Messiah, Christ, will be joined forever and will reign.

Walter Powers

Hang the holly

Whitestone: It looks like no one knows how to say “Christmas” anymore. If there wasn’t a Christmas, there would be no holiday! Anyway, the word “holiday” comes from the words “holy day.” Let’s hope we all have a happy holy holiday. M.J. Leslie

A real turkey

Jamaica: I love the “Godfather” movies. But not on Thanksgiving Day. Cursing, murders and so on are a no-no for the holiday. “Gone With the Wind” is on at the same time, so let’s all watch that film instead. A real classic movie. Jenny Kelly

Off stage

Forest Hills: If Sarah Palin can see Russia from her home, why can the Daily News not see Broadway from its office windows? How about making room for some acknowledgment of Broadway by dropping a few sports columns per week written by smug old guys advising managers how to manage games already played? Or how about a listing in the Sunday paper of Broadway

Carried away

THEODORE PARISIENNE and Off-Broadway shows, in place of an advertisement for a movie disguised as news? How about movie reviews of new releases like in the old days? Remember? Make believe you really are New York’s Hometown Newspaper. Carol Miles Great Neck, L.I.: As we approach the first, sad anniversary of the passing of the incomparable Carrie Fisher and her iconic mom, Debbie Reynolds, I would like to share with Voicers a memory I cherish of Fisher. In the autumn of 2009, I was going through a very difficult time in my professional life. I went to see Fisher in “Wishful Drinking.” She made me cry; she made me cheer; her performance was thrilling and transformative. The visuals and Hollywood artifacts she used were wonderful. Fisher shone and soared! She made me realize I would get through this dark time in my life. I so very much regret that I didn’t write to her then. Rest in peace, America’s Princess. And mom, too. Nadine Feingold

The color of laughter

Long Island City: In 1989, I saw the movie “Harlem Nights” in Brooklyn on Court St. Actress Della Reese was very funny and cursing throughout the movie. Too many white people didn’t understand my laughter. I also saw this movie in Harlem and had a funny evening. Sorry to say, “Harlem Nights” was really enjoyed by black people.
