Family Court system slap

- Stephen Rex Brown

NEW YORK CITY’S Family Court system chronically fails to resolve child support cases within the required 60 days, leaving mostly low-income mothers with no legal recourse, a new class-action lawsuit charges.

The Manhattan Supreme Court suit, filed by nine women who have tried and failed for months, and even years, to get their kids’ fathers to pay up, seeks significant Family Court reform.

“The court is willing to tolerate excuse after excuse,” attorney Rene Kathawala said. “For most of these fathers, they don’t feel the wrath of the court.”

The nine women are fighting for a total exceeding $300,000 in unpaid child support.

A court spokesman declined to comment on pending litigation.
