REP. JOHN LEWIS said Thursday he will not attend the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum because President Trump will be there.

Mississippi Democrat Bennie Thompson said he would join Lewis in boycotting Saturday’s event due to the President’s presence.

“President Trump’s attendance and his hurtful policies are an insult to the people portrayed in this civil rights museum,” the pair said in a statement. “President Trump’s disparaging comments about women, the disabled, immigrants and National Football League players disrespect the efforts of Fannie Lou Hamer, Aaron Henry, Medgar Evers, Robert Clark, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner and countless others who have given their all for Mississippi to be a better place.”

Lewis (photo inset, right), who also boycotted Trump’s inauguration, was scheduled to be a keynote speaker at the event due to his history in the state.

The 77-year-old civil rights icon was arrested in Jackson in 1961 with Freedom Riders who were protesting segregated bus travel, and was held at the infamous Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman.

Later, as the head of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Lewis organized Freedom Summer, a volunteer effort to register THE DAY after President Trump slurred through part of a speech, the White House announced he will undergo a physical exam.

Trump will have the exam at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington early next year and the results will be made public, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Thursday.

Questions about the President’s well-being were raised Wednesday after he garbled the tail end of a speech about moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. voters in Mississippi in 1964.

Lewis has feuded with Trump in the past, saying in January that he doesn’t view Trump as a “legitimate President.”

Trump fired back on Twitter: “Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results.”

Lewis and Thompson were also part of a crew of 58 Democrats in the House who voted in favor of impeaching Trump on Wednesday. The measure was voted down.

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant invited Trump to attend the opening of the civil rights museum and to celebrate the state’s 200th anniversary. The opening of the History of Mississippi Museum will also be part of the ceremonies.

The NAACP has said Trump should cancel his planned appearance because of his divisive record on civil rights issues.

Myrlie Evers, the widow of assassinated Mississippi NAACP leader Evers, has said she will attend — and address Trump’s presence.

“If God gives me the breath and the strength, I will address his attendance when I stand to speak,” she told The New York Times.
