St. John’s has win streak snapped by Arizona State

-

Romello White scored 22 points and No. 16 Arizona State held off St. John’s 82-70 on Friday night in the opener of the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic tripleheader at Staples Center.

Shannon Evans II added 18 points for the Sun Devils (8-0), off to their best start since 1980-81.

St. John’s rallied from a 13-point deficit early in the second half to trail 71-70 on a layup by Shamorie Ponds after he stole the ball from White.

After Remy Martin missed a layup for the Sun Devils, Bryan Trimble Jr. threw the ball away near the Red Storm’s bench and they never got any closer.

Kodi Justice hit a 3-pointer for Arizona State, launching a gameending 11-0 run. The Sun Devils made 23 of 27 free throws in the game, including their last eight in a row.

Ponds scored 19 points, Marvin Clark II added 18 points and Tariq Owens had 17 points for the Red Storm (8-2), who had their threegame winning streak ended.

HORSES DIE IN FIRE

A routine day at an elite training center for racehorses transformed into terror and chaos in minutes, with hundreds of thoroughbreds stampeding out of their stalls in a desperate attempt to flee a Southern California wildfire that set their barns ablaze.

While hundreds made it to the safety of a nearby racetrack, others galloped in circles, unsure which way to run. Still others, too frightened to leave their paddocks, stayed there and died.

Workers at San Luis Rey Downs said an estimated 30 to 40 horses perished Thursday in the wildfire.

FLAG TOSSER FINED

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters was fined $24,309 by the NFL on Friday for throwing a penalty flag into the stands against the Jets.

Peters also was suspended one game by Chiefs coach Andy Reid earlier in the week for his antics last Sunday in the 38-31 loss.

During the Jets’ go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs were called for three penalties to prolong the possession.

The last of the penalties frustrated Peters, who picked up one of the flags and tossed it into the seats at MetLife Stadium. Peters was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, and he headed straight to the locker room thinking he had been ejected. He wasn’t, though, and quickly reemerged from the locker room without socks on.

OH, BROTHERS!

Malcolm Subban won a matchup of siblings, making 41 saves and then denying all six shootout attempts to lead the Vegas Golden Knights to a 4-3 victory over star defenseman P.K. Subban and the Nashville Predators.

It was the first time the Subbans faced each other in an NHL game. According to the NHL, they became the 10th set of brothers to play against one another with one a skater and the other a goaltender.
