Leads Airbnb rally, hits pro-hotel Upper W. Side pol

- BY ELLEN MOYNIHAN and DENIS SLATTERY Actor Danny Glover encourages protesters on W. 72nd St. Saturday.

HE’S NOT too old for this.

Airbnb hosts, advocates and actor Danny Glover braved the city’s first snow of the season to rally outside of Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal’s Upper West Side office on Saturday — accusing the lawmaker of favoring the hotel industry over her constituents.

“You are the lethal weapon,” Glover told the crowd of 40 demonstrators who stomped through the wet weather in support of the short-term rental site. “The men and women who live in this city are citizens, working people, and have equity as taxpayers. They are the ones who are going to be the facilitators, their voices are going to be paramount.”

Glover, who played aging cop Roger Murtaugh in the “Lethal Weapon” movie franchise, is an Airbnb adviser tasked with representing the interests of people of color.

He and others claim Rosenthal has unfairly targeted Airbnb hosts and users through legislation.

The Democrat, who represents parts of the Upper West Side, has proposed a bill that would require Airbnb to disclose the exact location of available rentals.

“Airbnb refuses to work with us to ensure that the units on their site are legal,” Rosenthal told the Daily News, noting she was not at her office during the rally. “We’re trying to preserve affordable housing.” She added that she would like to sit down with Glover to talk about his advocacy for the site.

“I’d love to show him the truth about how Airbnb is decimating African-American communities,” Rosenthal said.

Both city and state officials have cracked down on short-term listings they say endanger tenants, drive up rents and flout state laws against renting an entire apartment for less than 30 days.

Teacher Liz Gallo, 30, who has hosted travelers in her Midtown apartment for the past two years, praised the sharing site.

“I’ve had people come from all over the world and stay with me,” she told the Daily News.

“Hosting is a very progressive way of allowing people to travel the world and experience all sorts of different things,” she said. “I think any attempt to stop that is very regressive and very anti what New York City is known for.”

Glover said Rosenthal and the hotel industry are targeting Airbnb because “it’s something that is imaginative, and when some people have power, they’re threatened. I don’t know why.”

Airbnb reported $1 billion in net revenue in the third quarter of 2017.
