Skipper, GM staying quiet

- BY KEVIN ARMSTRONG

YANKEES general manager Brian Cashman was walking off the Garden court at halftime of Kentucky’s game against Monmouth Saturday when a fan shouted, “Great trade today, boss!”

Cashman waved his right hand to acknowledge the fan, but he declined to confirm that the Yankees had completed a deal to reel in Marlins star Giancarlo Stanton from Miami.

“No comment,” Cashman said when asked about the deal by the Daily News.

Cashman, a Kentucky fan who grew up near Rupp Arena in Lexington, was joined by new Yankees manager Aaron Boone. They sat courtside alongside former Manhattan coach Barry Rohrssen and Hall of Fame receiver Cris Carter.

Cashman and Boone stayed for the whole game. Kentucky leveled Monmouth, 93-76. Kentucky coach John Calipari, who self-identifies as a Yankees and Pirates fan, noted that he spoke with Cashman afterward.

“We talked about trades,” Calipari said. He was asked if he had talked about Stanton with Cashman. “We’re gonna get that one done,” Calipari said. Boone said he could not comment on Stanton when interviewed by ESPN during the first half.

While the GM and coach were mum on the pending blockbuster trade, some players commented about it on Twitter. While Didi Gregorius didn’t answer questions at an autograph signing at Roosevelt Mall, he earlier in the day tweeted at Boone: “Hey Skip am I still batting 4th ???? (with a GIF attached of Duane ‘The Rock’ Johnson sporting a ‘People’s Eyebrow).”

Aaron Judge tweeted at Stanton with a GIF of a scene from “Stepbothers” where Will Ferrell says “Did we just become best friends?”
