Manning turns 37 years old on Jan. 3. He isn’t playing well. He will cost $22.2 million against the salary cap in 2018, the second-to-last year of his contract. And in case you haven’t been paying attention, Manning wants to be the starting quarterbac­k — that means Sunday, that means the rest of this season, that means next season if he stays.

The Giants owed Manning a better send-off than what John Mara, Jerry Reese and Ben McAdoo tried to give him with last week’s tone-deaf benching in Oakland. But the franchise doesn’t owe Manning the final two years on his deal if he’s not playing up to par and they feel confident in Davis Webb, a rookie firstround QB pick, or a cheaper veteran — especially if that veteran is more willing to start with the knowledge he’ll be replaced midseason for sure.
