Red sox pitcher booked after spat with wife

Red Sox starting pitcher Steven Wright was arrested Sunday at his Tennessee home on charges of domestic assault after an altercatio­n with his wife, Shannon, according to multiple reports.

The 33-year-old pitcher was booked and later released from jail, according to NBC Sports Boston.

While Wright was involved in a “verbal argument” with his wife, he did not “raise his hand at anyone,” according to a statement from the Wright family provided to NBC Sports Boston.

“Although he said things he deeply regrets, he did not raise his hand at anyone during the incident, and the situation was purely emotional. We are working together as a family to make our relationsh­ips stronger, and we ask that you respect our privacy as we do so,” the statement read.

The Red Sox released a statement acknowledg­ing the incident and stating the club takes matters such as this “very seriously.”

Wright started five games for the Red Sox last season, going 1-3 with a 8.25 ERA before having his season cut short due to knee surgery. The righthande­r sports a career 21-14 record with a 3.97 ERA. — Ari Gilberg
