Wannabe ISIS creep held in slay

- Christina Carrega

A MAN who authorities say declared allegiance to ISIS was indicted Wednesday in the killing of a stranger near the Barclays Center.

Matthew Passaro was arraigned on an indictment in the murder of 47-year-old Stephen Vargas on Sept. 20 in Brooklyn’s Boerum Hill neighborhood.

Passaro (photo), 46, walked up to Vargas at 578 Atlantic Ave. and started yelling at him.

After that exchange, Passaro went around the corner to change his clothes, then went back to where Vargas was standing and shot him multiple times, prosecutors said.

Passaro fled but was spotted on Nov. 1 attempting to leave the city from the Port Authority Bus Terminal, according to prosecutors, who said he was armed with a loaded .45-caliber pistol. They also said he pledged loyalty to ISIS when he was arrested.

A microscopic analysis of the recovered gun and ballistic evidence from the scene where Vargas died determined the gun Passaro was carrying was the murder weapon, prosecutors said.

The killing was captured on surveillance video. If convicted, Passaro faces 25 years to life in prison.
