NYPD 9/11 vet suicide

A RETIRED NYPD captain and 9/11 responder who spent his retirement as a pizza shop owner in the West Village has taken his own life, sources said Wednesday.

Doug Greenwood, 61, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a park near his home in Greenlawn, L.I., late Tuesday, according to the sources.

Greenwood (photo) served more than 20 years in the NYPD, mostly for the Manhattan South Task Force, where he was promoted to captain. After he retired, he became a co-owner of Bleecker St. Pizza on Seventh Ave. and Bleecker St., which was named by The New York Times as one of the top five places in New York City where one “must definitely eat.”

The restaurant made a pizza with a portrait of Pope Francis on it when the pontiff came to New York in September 2015, according to the shop’s website.

“Doug Greenwood had not one, but two amazing careers,” the pizzeria’s site notes.

As a member of the Manhattan South Task Force in Hell’s Kitchen, Greenwood was among the first responders to reach Ground Zero on 9/11.

“Doug’s unit spent long hours recovering limp bodies and other evidence from the crime scene,” according to his biography on the Bleecker St. Pizza website.

“After 40 consecutive days of exposure to synthetic dust and toxins, Doug’s lungs decided they’d had enough and he was forced to retire,” the bio reads.

A solemn manager at the pizza parlor declined to comment on Greenwood’s death Wednesday.

Calls to several family members were not returned.
