Livery rider killed in Brooklyn crash

- John Annese

AN ELDERLY Brooklyn woman died Sunday after a car crashed into the for-hire vehicle she was riding in, police said.

The crash happened just before 2:45 p.m., in Dyker Heights, not far from the “Dyker Lights” holiday light displays.

Helen Malinowski, 89, was riding in a Toyota Camry driven by 42-year-old Marlene Romero when a 2009 Kia slammed into the driver’s side of the vehicle on 81st St. at 11th Ave., police said.

The Kia driver, a 72-year-old woman, told police she came to a full stop before driving through the intersection, but didn’t notice Romero’s Camry when she accelerated. The impact sent the Camry into a parked car, and left Malinowski gravely injured. Medics took her to Lutheran Medical Center, but she couldn’t be saved.

Another of Romero’s passengers, a 79-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries, cops said.

Romero was arrested on a charge of driving with a suspended license, cops said.
