Offer of help from another aching parent

FESTIVE LIGHTS LINKED TO BLAZE

- BY KATIE HONAN

A HEROIC mother who knows the pain of losing her own loved ones in a deadly fire wants to help the family ripped apart by another Brooklyn blaze.

Gayle Sassoon (photo inset), who lost seven of her eight children when a fire engulfed her Midwood home in March 2015, reached out to Rabbi Joseph Potasnik on Monday shortly after hearing about the deadly Sheepshead Bay fire.

“What can I do to help to Azan family?” she asked Potasnik, the executive vice president of the New York Board of Rabbis. He shared her question at a menorah lighting vigil for the family held Monday night Brooklyn Borough Hall.

Aliza Azan, 40, her 3-year-old daughter, Henrietta, and sons Yitzah, 7, and Moshe, 11, were killed early Monday in a fire at their Brooklyn home. Three other children, a cousin and dad Yosi Azan managed to escape the fire.

In a twist, the Azan family were connected to the Sassoons through school.

Yosi Azan — who is clinging to life in a burn unit after running back inside his burning home to try to rescue his wife and children — struggled to comprehend the Sassoons’ tragedy in 2015, years before his own family suffering.

“This is something I can’t understand,” he wrote at the time on Facebook. “Three of their kids study with my children.”

Sassoon was home with her eight children the night of March 21, 2015 when a fire was sparked by a hot plate, officials said.

She managed to escape with one daughter but couldn’t save the seven others, despite running through flames inside the home.

Azan similarly tried to save his family early Monday morning from the fire, which officials said might have been sparked by a menorah lit for Chanukah.

At a vigil Monday, Borough President Eric Adams called again for a burn unit in Brooklyn.

“We committed ourselves after the loss of the Sassoon family members that we would give all that is needed to ensure that this burn unit was built,” he said. “Yet we have failed to do so.” outside
