More cops to protect us at holiday time

- Dan Rivoli

HOLIDAY travelers can expect an extra helping of police at the city’s busy transit stations and crossings.

Gov. Cuomo said Tuesday that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Port Authority are boosting security staff at bridges, tunnels, airports and transit hubs in light of two terror attacks in the city this fall.

Cuomo said in a statement that New York is a target for “people who oppose our way of life.”

“It’s a high-volume time. It’s a high-traffic time,” the governor said at the Manhattan side of the Triborough Bridge. “Given the increase in the volume in the traffic and given the recent events, we believe it’s prudent to increase security at the major crossings and the major transportation hubs.”

Part of the safety surge includes the deployment of state police and National Guard special operations teams.

Those teams will work alongside MTA and PA officers at Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, all nine MTA-run bridges and tunnels, Port Authority bridges and tunnels and LaGuardia and Kennedy airports.
